Welcome back to the podcast where we ask the question, what makes you happy?
My name is Jake Pearson. And today we have with us a referee in English semiprofessional soccer, football, as we call it-- as they call it in the United Kingdom and the managing director of The Third Team Nathan Sherratt from Durham, England. And I've tell you now, absolutely botched that. So my apologies, Nathan, how are you?
Nathan Sherratt 00:51
I'm really good. Thanks for having me.
Jake Pearson 00:53
Before we get into it, can you actually say where you're from correctly on my behalf, please?
Nathan Sherratt 01:00
It's Durham.
Jake Pearson 01:01
Yes, I botched and we even spoke about this, before we start, we're going to record the podcast. And you know, as an Aussie, I've done it again. So it is what it is. But here we go.
So thank you for coming on the podcast and getting ready to discuss things that make you happier in your life. Can you dive a little bit into that, what makes you happy?
Nathan Sherratt 01:19
I think that what makes me happy is you know, being able to get out and connect with nature and being in that environment, being able to walk in parks, along beaches and things like that, things that are probably a lot more easy to listeners who are in Australia, because your country is a lot more set out for that than some of the [unintelligible 01:42] we have up in the north of England where I'm from, but those are the kinds of things that make me happy sunlight and things like that, and getting out in it. Because I think that, you know, probably appreciate it a lot more, because we don't have as much of that here. But also, spending time with family and loved ones is a really, really important thing for me, because I think that my role as a referee, which obviously you touched on, it's quite stressful position to be and when people are constantly challenging your authority, you go out for 90 minutes, and you've got to make 300, 350 decisions. There's a lot of pressure on that, everybody's looking to make the right decisions and get things right. And I think that, you know, obviously, that's a big challenge.
And of course, in my professional life running my own business, The Third Team that again, is another massive pressure because you know, being self employed, there's nobody really else to turn to, I'm accountable for everything, finances, and paying bills and everything that goes into marketing and everything that goes into running a business, you know, it all falls at my door. So I think that there's a big element of pressure on that. And that's why I have to do the things that make me happy to recharge as well. You know, even things like just watching a TV show, or watching a film or something like that just charges me up and makes me happy. Because it's really, really important to get that balance and that happiness in your life when you walk a real tightrope, like I do.
Jake Pearson 03:13
Yes, I appreciate that you shared that there- it's really hard to find that balance for a lot of people, they're not doing enough of the things that actually make them happy in their life. Have you seen that in your immediate circle?
Nathan Sherratt 03:24
Yes, I work a lot with individuals on a one-to-one business and I see that sometimes even as human beings, we can be the barrier to our own kind of happiness, because we're always looking for more, always looking for something different, always want more. And I think sometimes to be happy with your lot to take compliments and things like that, those things can boost your happiness. And I think you know, a lot more people will be a lot happier if you're a lot more open to embracing those things in life.
Jake Pearson 03:59
Beautiful. And do you think that would tie in to your advice you'd give to the listeners today? Or what to do with their happiness?
Nathan Sherratt 04:05
Yes, because I think that it really does take because I think making the most of things and embracing the time that you've got with people and doing things and I have a big sort of slogan that I really like, it's two words, it's "savor it", so whenever you're in a moment that you know is going to be a good moment for you, for example if you're graduating or if you've gone somewhere you've always wanted to go or there's a real significant milestone point in your life you need to make a contract with yourself where you say, I'm going to savor it today, this is a special moment I'm going to savor it but really normalizing that and taking that you know if you if you have a film night or a movie night or however you would say it with your partner or with family members or things like that, even just savoring those moments when you're together because the rat race of life and everything that goes on, you know, having those opportunities to just be in the moment. It's really, really important because we live increasingly fast paced lives now.
Jake Pearson 05:14
I think that's a beautiful way to end a short podcast episode, savor it. No matter what you're doing in your life, try to take it in and actually just savor it. Savor the moment, savor- it doesn't have to be anything drastic or big. It could be literally use it down with a cup of coffee in the sun, going for a walk, savor those moments and try and tie that into your daily happiness.
Nathan, thank you so much for coming on the podcast and sharing all things your happiness.
